'Rebound Weight Gain' Blamed For Diets Failing

RENO, Nev., Jan. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Successful weight loss does not happen by magic, according to weight loss expert Dr. Kent Sasse (http://www.SasseGuide.com). Rebound Weight Gain commonly occurs after a diet, and the pounds are put back on faster than they ever came off. And yet, some weight loss programs succeed while others fail.

"Diets don't work because they almost always lead to Rebound Weight Gain," says Dr. Sasse, founder and medical director of the International Metabolic Institute (http://www.iMetabolic.com). "The loss of muscle and protein stores during dieting causes powerful biochemical signals that lead to intense hunger and weight gain after the diet comes to an end."

More than 50% of adults are significantly overweight, and many are dieting to lose those extra pounds.

Infomercial pitchman found in contempt for misleading TV ads

Infomercial pitchman Kevin Trudeau has been found in contempt of a federal court order barring him from using misleading TV spots to sell his popular books.

U.S. District Judge Robert Gettleman in Chicago agreed with the Federal Trade Commission that Trudeau was deceptive in infomercials for his current best-seller, "The Weight Loss Cure 'They' Don't Want You to Know About." In infomercials for the book, Trudeau described his diet plan to a mock interviewer as "the easiest method known on planet Earth."

Follow the diet, Trudeau contended, and you can eat anything you want.

Why High-Protein, Low-Fat, And Low-Carbohydrate Diets Suppress Hunger

Many popular diet plans are based on changing the proportion of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats one ingests as a method to promote weight loss. There has been some controversy regarding the effectiveness of these diets, but a new study accepted for publication in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (JCEM) could shed light on potential mechanisms by which various diets promote weight loss.

This study examined the relative ability of different nutrient types to suppress ghrelin, which is secreted by the stomach and is the only known appetite-stimulating hormone. Circulating ghrelin levels increase shortly before meals and then decrease promptly after ingestion of food.

"We found that when fat is consumed, levels of ghrelin remain relatively high, which could in turn stimulate hunger," said Dr.
