Party Mix - Healthy Recipe

Those hungry moments between meals can be a true challenge for any weight-loss plan. Here is a snack from the American Heart Association to keep you from reaching for the potato chips.

Serves 14

1/4 cup acceptable margarine

1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

1/2 cup small unsalted pretzel sticks

1/2 cup puffed rice

1 cup spoon-size shredded wheat

1/2 cup unsalted peanuts

Melt margarine in non-stick skillet over medium heat. Add garlic powder and mix well. Add remaining ingredients and toss together. Serve warm.

For a slightly different taste, use walnuts, pecans or a mixture of nuts in place of peanuts. For a sweeter taste, use 1/4 cup raisins in place of the garlic powder.

Why High-Protein, Low-Fat, And Low-Carbohydrate Diets Suppress Hunger

Many popular diet plans are based on changing the proportion of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats one ingests as a method to promote weight loss. There has been some controversy regarding the effectiveness of these diets, but a new study accepted for publication in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (JCEM) could shed light on potential mechanisms by which various diets promote weight loss.

This study examined the relative ability of different nutrient types to suppress ghrelin, which is secreted by the stomach and is the only known appetite-stimulating hormone. Circulating ghrelin levels increase shortly before meals and then decrease promptly after ingestion of food.

"We found that when fat is consumed, levels of ghrelin remain relatively high, which could in turn stimulate hunger," said Dr.

Pay attention to unexplained weight changes A pound or two for a cat is the equivalent of 10 or 20 pounds for us. And, if the weight change is rapid, the situation calls for veterinary attention, warns Christensen. A sudden gain or loss may signal cancer, kidney and liver disease, hyperthyroidism and several other conditions.

Note changes in eating habits, too If your pet turns up its nose after a few bites, it might simply be that new food you bought. "But disinterest in eating can also happen when a cat is under stress -- maybe some change is happening in your household -- experiencing tooth pain or tongue ulcers, dealing with hot or humid weather, or battling something more serious such as an upper respiratory problem, kidney failure, liver disease, diabetes, bowel disease, heart disease, cancer or feline leukemia," according to Christensen.

WIAC women's basketball: Whitewater's on a roll

The disappointment carried the weight of an entire season.

But along with the frustration and finality that accompanied the 75-74 season-ending loss to UW-Platteville last February, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team found a renewed sense of determination.

"We were all disappointed after that game," said sophomore Kelsey Hendrickson, who practiced with the Warhawks last year but did not see game action after transferring from North Dakota State. "We all felt like we had something to prove going into the summer and then this season."

Michigan researchers test pedometer's effectiveness Does wearing a pedometer promote weight loss, or is it just another ineffective fitness fad? For an answer, University of Michigan researchers analyzed the results of nine studies involving 307 participants who wore pedometers for a median of 16 weeks. All but one of the studies led to minor weight loss, on average about 3 pounds per person. The longer they stuck with the pedometer-walking program, the more weight they lost, according to the study, published in a recent issue of Annals of Family Medicine. The researchers noted that regular exercise, including walking, not only pares pounds, but reduces diabetes and heart-disease risk and lowers blood pressure. - Marie McCullough In weight loss, it's not what you eat, but what you read Speaking of weight loss, a new study concludes that magazines aimed at African American women are more likely than "mainstream" women's magazines to encourage fad diets and reliance on faith rather than proven fat-fighting strategies.
